Competitions

There are 2 competitions running

  1. For Primary schools
  2. For Secondary Schools

Drawing competition for Primary Schools

Draw one of our friendly, adventurous seismometers!

Diving deep into the sea is their favourite thing to do. When there, they can hear very, very well. They will hear and record the songs of whales, and they will hear earthquakes, both close and very far away, even on the other side of the Earth!

The recordings of earthquakes are called seismograms. They are like songs of the earthquakes, each of them different, and they tell scientists what is inside the Earth.

What does the seismometer look like to you? Maybe a dinosaur? Robot?  Elephant? Draw what you think it looks like, by itself or at the bottom of the sea (where it will meet a lot of wonderful sea creatures).

You can follow the progress of the SEA-SEIS expedition in the Atlantic Ocean on sea-seis.ie.

Please post your entry to: SEA-SEIS Competition, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Geophysics Section, 5 Merrion Sq, Dublin 2. Make sure to include your name, age, the name of your school and the name of your teacher.

The competition closes on 21 December, 2018. The winners will be announced in January, 2019. All short-listed entries will be published on sea-seis.ie. Fun prizes are waiting for winners and runners-up!

The drawing competition evaluation criteria:
– relevance
– artistic merit
– originality

Good luck!

The song/rap competition for Secondary Schools

Compose a rap on a topic related to seismology, the SEA-SEIS expedition, Earth science or exploring the interior of the Earth. (Have you seen StoryBots? – that’s the idea!).

Get information and ideas from sea-seis.ie, from video-links to the ship if your class participates, and from your own reading.

Entries from entire classes or smaller groups of students are welcome.
